semester finale 12/15/2008

Sexual violence is never an easy situation to approach. It's still quite taboo in dialogue within our communities, and I wonder if this series of events had happened at any other time, would it be handled in the same manner, under the same circumstances, as it is handled now?

I refer to the recent string of sexual assaults that have occurred in the Goucher community, a small, tight-knit community, the Goucher bubble. Anyone who's spent any time with me over the past year knows full well how invested I am in issues involving sexual violence, and working on initiatives on campus for better response and education about sexual violence. We'd love to think no news is good news, but the silence on our campus from all time prior to now, that was not a good silence. The fact that members of the Goucher community have come forward, not just in these instances, but about others, and that our school takes these allegations seriously and has been open about these events and launching an investigation, it shows a great progress that I don't think most college administrations, let alone society as a whole, could acknowledge or take on as we have, and by some of the questions and statements that the reporter made last night, really hit that idea home for me. people are not prepared to believe that this can happen, that this is real, and want to validate a fault in the survivor, or in the situation, isolating it from their comfort zone, their environment, so it isn't possible it could happen to them, and are willing to disrupt a silent vigil to question validity of allegations, of insinuating victim-blaming. it's a heavy load and i know i am prepared to take it on this final push in education as much as possible.

i just hope the goucher administration and the baltimore county police are prepared to do the same with their investigation.

so this is how the semester ends. i had one exam yesterday, have two today, and one on thursday. pack up everything and move home to dc for a couple weeks. cut and dry.

so for the semester finale, kitchen sink radio had a two hour show. my friend james came up from dc to co-host with me, and we were joined by emily, amanda, herve, ari, joe, chris, and asa. there were quite a few gems in conversation and insult, and overall a good way to head out of the pearlstone studio, probably my last show in there ever, considering the athenaeum will be complete by the time i return from costa rica.

james also told me i write my playlists wrong. so. i'll do it the "proper" way today.

everything moves.

It's a good day.

Yesterday my friends Fireworks came to town with Polar Bear Club and played Charm City Art Space with Brick. I love seeing 100+ kids packed in the basement stoked and screaming and sweating and smiling and surfing and it was quite possibly the best DIY show I've been to all year, competing only with the Celebrated Summer Two Year Anniversary at 10 Car.

Standing behind Polar Bear Club with Mitch and Rob and surveying the scene, I could do nothing but smile. I think all of us involved with the Art Space had swollen hearts. It was a night we really needed, in energy and community. Revival. Revitalization. Regain.

Baltimore, you're the best.

Seeing Kyle and Tymm and Chris and all those boys for the first time in almost two years also really made my night exceptional. A good deal of old friends, and new, attended, and it just felt good. It felt strong. I had an extraordinary amount of emotion(s) flowing through me last night and it was the right time and right place for them all.

Today I feel like I'm on my own solid ground and it's about time I felt that way again.

Last day of classes today.
I have this feeling of elation I have no interest in diluting.
Other than that, I give zero fucks.

recap 12/08/2008

first and foremost, i now contribute to the icoulddietomorrow music blog. check it out!

the past week was the most turbulent of the semester. aside from my drawing critique tomorrow, the week is free. next week, four exams. then done.

last week i saw Dr. Dog in DC and it's in my top shows of 2008. I will have an exact list come the end of the month, but really, phenomenal.

Yesterday I completed my 26th recreational read of the year. I'm on a roll, this week and last week, and I don't really see it slowing down for the remainder of the year.

I've read a lot of contemporary non-fiction lately, many stories involving college-age girls, "good girls." I'm in college, but the idea I have of "college girls" is still very academic and very ivy, and it doesn't seem to match up with my environment. I want to fulfill that image I have, but I don't think that can happen here at Goucher; I think it's fundamentally impossible. So this idea of "good girl," a prep, a prude, where in my being does that want come from?

When I was home I looked through all the old mixtapes and mix cds I received in high school, listening to the few from people who probably-like myself with theirs- hadn't thought of my existence in years. It seemed more bare bones then, this dating thing.

I remember visiting Vassar College as a senior in high school. I stayed with a student in a really nice dorm, met a hallmate of hers. I think his name was Harris. I remember staying up in the common room with him all night. In the morning I had to go to an activity, but when I returned to the dorm he had brought breakfast for me, crêpes, and left them in the fridge.

In my head, I don't see that sort of thing ever happening to me again, the no-frills, no-alterior motivated efforts. So part of me really does want to go back to the way I was in high school, that academic, untouchable girl.

I was joined in the studio last night by Angie, Scott, Emily, Ari, and Joe. My friend Erik called in and it was quite a nice surprise to top off the evening.

1) Grey Wind- Envy
2) Tongue Like A Battering Ram- The Faction
3) Viejos Pateticos- Los Crudos
4) Razors Edge- BBQ Chickens
5) Malfunction- Cro-Mags
6) Stand Still- Gorilla Biscuits
7) Trying- Dag Nasty
8) Pinned Up- Avail
9) Jailbird- The Exploding Hearts
10) When I Give The Signal, Run!- The Falcon

turnstyles.

i came home for the quiet.

i woke up just before dawn. tangled in an avalanche of pillows and blankets, i cradled a sock monkey in my elbow. at some point prior my mom tucked the covers above my shoulders and closed the door to my bedroom.

outside there's a forest of trees, colored in cold hues of purple and blue like fingers in the cold. i spent the morning in silence, minus the low hum of the heater in the living room, wrapped in a kimono on the chez lounge, reading novels and dispelling the knot at the bottom of my esophagus.

a lonely rage. the hunger is the meanest cage.

on one hand, i have no idea how i got here, except that at i showed up at 1:30 in the morning with only my cell phone and wallet and without keys after declining a ride back to baltimore because i couldn't bring myself to go back, not last night.

on the other hand, i know exactly how i got here. i ran too far from home, too far out on the ledge of relying on other people for my well-being. what happened to my self-sufficiency, my autonomy? i pulled a trigger and my ears ring and i feel like there should be blood on my hands, maybe my own more than anyone else's. and everyone else will shout and scream at how wrong i am to come to these conclusions, because i usually am wrong, but i still feel responsible, too ready to take the blame once again.

i'd like to think that the telenovela is dead; that the demons are subdued, purged for this final month of two thousand and eight. i will sink back into bookshelves (i'm in my fourth novel of the week), but i have enough people pulling me out to keep me from disappearing completely.

good good friends and good good things.
maybe simplicity will come sooner than i thought.

thanksgiving.

with four loads of laundry in the wash, two vegan pumpkin cheesecakes in the oven, new found glory blasting through the apartment, and a whole campus to myself...

happy thanksgiving weekend.

this thanksgiving really makes me think meat is disgusting.

two days in dc was sufficient for me, although i am pretty bummed i didn't make it to the annual thanksgiving dessert potluck. this might have been the first year in at least three years where my heart's really wanted to go. boooo.

nevertheless, i saw the mandatory few and the family.

"now is the time to finish old tasks."
thank you, mass produced fortunes.

and i'm pretty stoked about these.

recap 11/17/2008

impulses.

much of this semester ran on impulse, but it was an impulse filled with anger, for vengeance and validation.
last night on I-95 I had a moment of clarity and as impulsive as my realization was, it triggered the collapse of my identity for the past two months.
it is a good thing, i think.

i pressed my zine on friday and distributed 15+ in baltimore and up north this weekend. i noticed the handful of grammatical errors I'm going to fix before repressing (also considering making a second edition with an edited section based on said moment of clarity since two thousand and great is not over, or maybe i'll just hold off until the next issue!). so, if you see me during thanksgiving break and want a copy, ask me for one.

things i enjoy about cold weather:
-giant mugs of hot apple cider at one world (WHILE SNOWING A PLUS)
-wearing spandex leggings underneath jeans
-the smell of the air
-all the different hues of color expressed by the goucher campus
-the times my hands and feet are warm

things i don't enjoy about cold weather:
-the wind
-the sun sets by 5 o'clock
-my skin and lips feel dry
-it's pretty, but it's still cold
-the times my hands and feet are cold (which is most of the time and would be solved if i bought a hat or pair of gloves)

last week's playlist:
1) The Day's Refrain- Texas Is The Reason
2) We Are Both Writers- Kind Of Like Spitting
3) The Good Life- Weezer
4) Nosferatu Man- Slint
5) The Kitchen Floor- The Broadways

11/10/2008 recap

So Monday I finally got a link to all 943 photos taken with the band camera during tour this past summer...

there are way more on my flickr...

It's difficult to belive that tour ended three months ago. As ready as I was to return home after three weeks, I miss it. A lot. It was a different time and a different place in my life, a really really good one, and I wish I could savor it more now. I'm in a good place now, as well, but it's different. On tour I had a backpack and a sleeping bag, four friends, two being my closest, and a different city to explore almost every night. and the sweetest bit? confidence in my home, my friends, and a boy back in baltimore for whom I was head over heels. summer was basic and simple and absolutely satiated. i had fluidity then; now i have perpetual motion. alas alas, things must come to an end sometime, and i have confidences in other things--not alternatives, just other things. suffered the casualties but the army of support proves i will never need to go to war with myself on my ability to reason. beginning on 5 january i will once again live out of a backpack, in a cloud forest, in costa rica, away from cars and cement and industry. i want simple and satiated, and i believe it will come soon enough.

this semester is a mixture of smiles and sickness (not illness).

the chickens always come home to roost.

i felt a new hollowness after reading the postcard. i guess i don't miss it anymore. i guess i'm finally on the level on which i needed to be months ago. it's just a coincidence, one that made me smirk and shake my head nonetheless, but i swear...

julian, bridgette, and ari hung out in the studio with me on monday. failed with brovember, but i don't really mind not being bro-qualified.

1) Back to Oregon- Broadway Calls
2) Waiting for Departure- Gracer
3) Loud & Clear- Title Fight
4) NOBLE STABBINGS!!- Dillinger Four
5) Don't Walk Away- Shelter
6) Late Bloomer- Fight Amp
7) Native Son With No Nation- Crispus Attucks
8) Face It- Guns Up!
9) Reality Unfolds- Trapper Under Ice
10) Diesel & Gunpowder- Another Breath
11) Not For Anyone- Hot Water Music
12) Audio Geography- Sundowner
13) Breather- Chapterhouse

my thoughts on the election & 11/03/2008 recap

okay my 80 cents on the election:

voting matters. i'm an independent, the two-party alienates and disenfranchises many people in this country and i therefore do not wholely support it. i also consider myself relatively radical (to the left), but i am also pragmatic. certainly the government won't get their hands dirty in the community sustainability actions that matter to me, but there are several significant federal legislations dealing with reproductive rights, gay rights, immigration rights, foreign policy, etc that do effect the rights and abilities we currently have in our country, and creating better policies for many underserved people in this country. while the heads of these acts fall under the eyes of judicial system (which currently leans conservative), having an executive office with a conservative agenda on par or greater than that of the judicial system only jeopardizes the more liberal policies currently in place at an even higher risk of being nullified, as well as making new, improved policies on immigration/foreign/environmental affairs more difficult to obtain. so yes, having barack obama as the next president of the united states is critical in my book when it comes to maintaining many of these rights.

voting is not just about the presidential election. state elections, in many ways, are even more important for people who are focused on their communities' sustainability. state legislature has a stronghold on the civil liberties we have/fight for, as seen in proposition 8 in california. no one said you had to fill out every section on the ballot, but you have the choice, the option, the right, the privilege to have a voice in what matters on a federal as well as local ballot. for a country that is so pressed on it's citizens believing they are owed or entitled to something and if the government doesn't provide it, then it fails. that's just laziness.

i don't think obama will be able to immediately solve many of the issues that plague this country, whether he says he will or not. no one in my lifetime has been able to mobilize, motivate, and engage as many youth as obama has in the past two years--not just youth, or even the underserved, but a mass population. that strikes something in me; to see so many people become involved and aware of politics and community, whether it's askew in liberal policy, whatever, i'd like to think that that would make people more interested and motivated to take more critical views of our societies, our politics, our environments and see what they can do to make it better and themselves. there are enough people in this country who can speak and act within their communities to make them safer and more sustainable that we should be able to create these changes ourselves and not rely on the government. we don't expect hand-outs by the upper-class because it would be condescending, so why use that same "the government doesn't give a shit about us" as a reason to be apathetic?

a great deal of my extended family is republican and supportive of mccain. i don't ever aim to change people's minds and debate on for whom they should vote. however, and this could be said to any person in the united states, whatever view they support, be educated in your decisions. most of this country suffers from ignorance on politics and economics and blindly looks at the superficial, mass media projections. one thing that isn't just in the "i go to a small liberal arts college" but also in the punk/diy/radical community is the wearing of keffiyehs. does it even have a symbol of solidarity or has it lost that symbolism and become purely a fashion trend? this question has bothered me for months, but seems to be more prevalent now simply because there's more capitalist exposure. but let's save that argument for another time.

my cousin believes obama will make the United States a socialist country. WRONG. it already is. surprise! our modern economic (keynesian) endorses government intervention, because pure laissez-faire economics (classical) proved to not work (see the great depression). a market-driven economy is inherently unstable. after the great depression, FDR instituted the New Deal in attempt stabilize our economic system. mccain likes fdr. fdr was criticized as a socialist (and continues to be). however, without him (and without WWII, honestly), our economic system would have failed for a much longer time until the government intervened. public goods, social services, etc. are all redistributive and allocative functions of the government are policies that have until now really kept our country from suffering a massive economic crisis. the government bailed out the banking system. the government now owns part of the banking system. there are socialist elements in our economic structure, and now we actually get to see how many of these elements play critical roles in stabilizing our economy. it wouldn't really make much of a difference who was in charge.

as i sat with my roommates after the announcement was made of obama's victory, one commented that she didn't get why the news harped on "the first black president." i must remind myself that obama will be the first black president, because ethnicity was not a priority for me in this election. i think for most liberal, mid-atlantic/new englanders, even those on the west coast, we forget (or attempt to suppress) that the subject of ethnicity is HUGE for many people in this country, be it in the African American community or elsewhere, a positive or negative factor in voting choice. my friend jen said, "there is so much about having a black role model in the white house that is completely awesome and is really important for our country. tons of my friends (especially teachers who work with low income kids) have been telling me about students and their indescribable reactions/faces when talking about obama. it's not just that he is black but that he is also in touch with reality, at least far more than the GOP dudes." and it's true. in north carolina, more african americans voted on monday morning than cumulatively in the 2004 election. just 50 years ago most african and west indian americans couldn't exercise their rights to vote. is racism over? no, nowhere close. but this election is monumental in our history for too many reasons.

today i am proud to be a citizen of the united states. we certainly have a long way to go, and the regulations bush currently attempts to hustle into our legislature make it an even steeper, uphill battle. still, the people of our country mobilized. change will come by our own hands, as well as the government's.

10/27/2008 recap

Yesterday made me really really happy. Right before the show, I was at a presentation by Dr. David Lisak called "Confronting the Realities of Sexual Violence." This was one of the programs from the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Initiative innovation grant last semester. I'm picturing mid-spring, with myself and Steve, Prof. Marguerite Hoyt, Chaplain Cynthia Terry, and Counselor Sharon Spector sitting around a table trying to figure out how we'll pull this together and make everything work and successful. And last night, six months later, having Merrick lecture hall filled with mainly students, and a lot of men, for Dr. Lisak's presentation. Not only coming to the presentation, but interacting, questioning, and staying after the program to join our taskforce. This is the beginning of a legacy and it is absolutely thrilling to see it so postiviely and enthusiastically embraced. We are building something that will shift the paradigm and change our culture.

Ari co-hosted last night's show with me and we certianly had a lot of talk about!

Last night was also the first time i had FISHSTICKS since elementary school. Apparently I did not fulfill the juicebox requirement, but HOLY FRIJOLES, fishsticks are delicious. mmmmmm.

During the juicebox discussion, my dad, cute as can be fact-checker for Kitchen Sink Radio, sent me three text messages:
1) There are 16 flavors of Juicy Juice
2) But only seven come in box size (ADDENDUM BY ME: ONLY SIX ARE 4.23oz FUN SIZE, SEVEN FOR LARGER 6.75oz JUICEBOX)
3) apple, berry, grape, kiwi-strawberry, orange-tangerine, punch, strawberry-banana (only available in larger juicebox)

We also found a copy of Disney's Alice in Wonderland on vinyl with a full color booklet and Ari read a small excerpt. We also determined that Ari may or may not be a good Sarah Palin for Halloween, but maybe that's too popular of a costume.

playlist:
1) Marina Do Bairro- Bonde Do Role
2) World Town- M.I.A.
3) In Step- Girl Talk
4) Call Call- The Faint
5) Clones (We're All)- Mose Giganticus
6) DVNO- Justice
7) The Model- Kraftwerk
8) Romantic Rights- Death From Above 1979
9) Cut and Paste- Food For Animals
10) My Moon My Man- Feist
11) Away Message- Pink Nasty
12) Right Back At You- Mobb Deep

Next week is election special!!!

midterm mile 10/14/2008

MY BEST FRIEND FOREVER was home for his midsemester break, so he came up on Monday to join me for my radioshow! It ruled! Matching tattoos, family portraits, and photobooths still to come.

Ari and Emily also stopped by the studio in the midst of our midterm hell. Ari and Alex fought over the greatness of Moby Dick and what I found out in Accouting today was called the "dead cat" theory. So good.

It's autumn. This means lofi and slowcore all the time. The scarves are out, as are the frye boots and sweaters (I found a super obnoxious pink cardigan when I went home this weekend, AWESOME!). My goal is to be the best dressed this week, and so far I'm on a roll. Just wait until Thursday, I'm telling you.

My weekends over the past month have been absolutely outstanding, minus the fact that I've lost the ability to do any work, leaving me swamped on Mondays and Tuesdays, and usually Wednesdays, too. But it's about balance, yes? This weekend I rounded out my time at Charm City Art Space with a dance band from France, playing tourist in DC Saturday, Season opener of the Caps with my dad on Saturday night, leading into late night trips to College Park and move-in sleepovers with reemerging roots. And Sunday? A trip to Larriland Farms with my mom and two of my roommates, followed by the intramural season's concluding soccer tournament. You can check out photos on my flickr from Sunday.

I only have to put up with two more days of class and then I'm free for a five day weekend. Volunteering at MCASA (maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault Conference) on Friday, followed by a long weekend in PHILADELPHIA! Holler!

i REALLY like the bruises. KSR #2 for FA/08

This weekend was endurance weekend. On Saturday I went kayaking in Pennsylvania, and on Sunday I had my first cyclocross race at Charm City. Both were SO MUCH FUN, but I'm ready to take a bit of a rest this week. Also, my lower body looks like someone took a sock of quarters to it. Whatever. It rules. Photos not as good as real life are up on my flickr. You can also go to the Proteus Cyclocross blog and read all about our team experiences. I posted a little post-race blurb as well. But in short: I finished. I placed. I wasn't last. I didn't throw up. I had a really bad crash in the first lap that everyone heard about. aaaaand I love cyclocross.

The studio was packed again last night. Saaj, Ari, and Dan all stopped by and Amanda, Emily, Bridgette, Cait and Julian held it down with me in the studio and sang some Rick Springfield. We also got a call from the spectacular RICH SIMON, Goucher Radio's former Director of Programming and who's pretty much responsible for making Goucher Radio what it is today.

1) One Beat- Sleater-Kinney

13) Long Way From, Long Way Since- The Impossibles

I really need to manage my activities this semester and make sure I don't overload. Oh wait, I already did. Wompwomp.

Obviously I still do Goucher Radio. I stepped down from President of Gophers for Choice, the Reproductive Rights/Sexual Health organization I started on campus to dedicate my time to the Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Initiative myself and a team of faculty/staff/students head. I'm also VP of the Bike Club, on the board for the Student Health Advisory Committee, and a member of Goucher's Suicide Awareness Project. And work part-time. Taking 16 credits and auditing the Environmental Economics class. Oh, and did I mention I'm supposed to leave for Costa Rica in less than four months? No? Well, I'M MOVING TO COSTA RICA FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 2009 to study global-local challenges of social and environmental sustainability.

This weekend and into next week are fantastic for shows. I stopped going to most shows after returning from tour (after three weeks straight of shows? Kind of got burned out.) But this next week includes:

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH - 7PM

and then next week Pinback and Tegan & Sara/City & Colour. YESSSSSSSSSSS. but we'll talk about those next Monday.

Have a great week, y'allz!

summer update #1

do you realize that you now have a great potential to instigate surprises? your knack for healing the unhealable is at a peak, as is your ability to accomplish the impossible, get insight into the incomprehensible, and feel equanimity amid the uncontrollable. What do you plan to do with all that mojo?I suggest that you act like a character in a fairy tale who has been given three wishes. not two or four, but three.

everything rules.

summer in baltimore.

my apartment is great. lots of room, lots of light, perfect distances from everywhere i want to be.
my internship is better than i could have imagined. i've spent most of the past week and a half installing and rotating exhibitions at the walters museum and the creative alliance. it's been pretty intense, but it's a critical time and i'm more than overjoyed to be a part of it.

my relationship with my bicycle is much better now that i have it with me and ride it everyday.

baltimore is the place to visit this summer. the people, the shows, the brunches, i lovelovelove it.

new jams for summer:
+Abe Froman, Baltimore is Scum
+Young Hearts, The Fight EP
+Nana Grizol, Love It Love It
+The Max Levine Ensemble, OK Smartypants
+H20, F.T.T.W.
+Good Luck, Into Lake Griffy
+Band Of Horses, Everything All The Time and Cease To Begin

Last night Man Man played Goucher College. I have never seen anything like it occur at my school. SO much dancing and sweating and yelling and clapping. the power went out twice, but drum circles an saxophones made interludes bearable and kept the intensity going. PLUS, tons of pretty girls and tight jean'd boys with bandanas and sunglasses infiltrated the goucher bubble, which was really neat. and awkward. i had a good time, i'm pretty sure everyone did. good way to say...

HEY! FUCK! IT'S THE FUCKING LAST WEEK OF CLASSES! I'VE FINISHED ALL MY FUCKING WORK! LET'S FUCKING DANCE!

yeah.

so. last night was the last episode of KSR for the semester. next monday i will probably be off dancing with pretty girls and tight jean'd boys with bandanas and sunglasses. i need at least one go-crazy-and-party-and-dance before the end of a semester that pushed me off the side of a cliff.

but really. i accomplished a lot this semester and am quite proud of my work. however, i'm ready to end this chapter and move out...

...to an apartment a few miles away in the city for the summer. lots of kickball, bike rides, and brunches.

friends' band appreciation night 04/28/2008

"The news hit me like a ton. I didn't know what I was waiting for. That day came like a rolling thunder and we were waiting for the sun. "Hey man I haven't seen you in a while." Get the hell out of this circumstance. Can't fight this kind of feeling that we're dealing with. I feel helpless and useless. It's clear now. This day's decided. I feel like I'm defeated. It's clear now this heart's divided. I feel like I'm defeated. Shivers shake the ground we're on. Cold feet dance in nervousness. Speechless with my hands in my pockets. Skin cracks as we march in. Sit down and let the feeling take control. Creepy. Can't hide it with a smile. I'm pretty sure I don't believe in god, but I can pretend for a little while."

i played this song for the one year anniversary of jamie's death last semester. right now, it runs clear through my head for david.

when it came to making my playlist this week, i wanted to pick a song that really signified our relationship. it was friends' band appreciation night, but i figured the one song i would choose would not interfere.

"There's no one in town I know
You gave us some place to go
I never said thank you for that
'thought I might get one more chance

What would you think of me now?
So lucky, so strong, so proud
I never said thank you for that
Now I'll never have a chance

May angels lead you in
Hear you me my friends
On sleepless roads, the sleepless go
May angels lead you in

So what would you think of me now?
So lucky, so strong, so proud
I never said thank you for that
Now I'll never have a chance

May angels lead you in
Hear you me my friends
On sleepless roads the sleepless go
May angels lead you in

(May angels lead you in)
May angels lead you in
(May angels lead you in)
May angels lead you in

And if you were with me tonight
I'd sing to you just one more time
A song for a heart so big
God couldn't let it live

May angels lead you in
Hear you me my friends
On sleepless roads the sleepless go
May angels lead you in

May angels lead you in
Hear you me my friends
On sleepless roads the sleepless go
May angels lead you in"

david elliot golub.
not dave. david.

a few days after i found out about david's death i had a meeting with goucher's chaplain, cynthia terry. my relationship with cynthia has never been a spiritual one; she was my mentor for LEAD and we're currently working together on the innovation grant to bring sexual assault awareness and response training programs to goucher. but for this, for this i really needed guidance. a co-worker told me at work that "this is all part of his big plan. he's testing you."

and for a millisecond, i believed in my coworker. and everything was okay. and that millisecond scared me. i don't believe in god in this almighty, all-knowing, all-doing being. and the fact that everything was okay when i let myself think that for one moment, yes, these feelings can be justified (or can they?). no. there is no such thing as justification, there is no such thing as moral right or wrong in this situation because he is still dead. as much as i was hesitant to tell cynthia about this moment, i knew she was the only person who had the ability to help me through it and understand it. and to my relief, she believes what i believe; trials are random. there is no big plan. shit happens and we deal and doesn't mean we aren't allowed to be confused about it.

the memorial was friday afternoon. after it ended, carolina, lela, and i drove to adams morgan to get falafel and then ventured to the neighborhood swings. talked through the sunset. back to carolina's for coca leaves and more talking. more memories. more imperfections.

our birthdays were 3 days apart.
he took me to my first fort reno.
and he was the first boy to ever hold my hand.

one really important issue i think i need to bring up is that a friend of mine committed suicide a little over a week ago. death has played some sort of role every semester of my college experience. this death, a suicide, is unlike any i've had to cope with in the past two years.

he was a good friend. it's heartbreaking to know his struggle and his pain overpowered him.

next week is friends' band appreciation night. if you're in a band, and you're my friend, send me an mp3 or two and maybe i'll hook you up with a spot on my show. kitchensinkradio[at]gmail[dot]com. hollerz.

Good Morning, Goucher.

good way to start my day.

Dear Goucher Radio staff and Communication department,

I wanted to let you all know some exciting news. George Capalbo of Backbone Networks (our software company) told me earlier this evening that Goucher Radio has been chosen by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System as one of ten college radio stations that will be an official radio station on iTunes. George has told me that when we get back from spring break, our stream will not only be available on Quicktime through our website, but also through a live stream on iTunes. Millions of listeners stream live programs every day on iTunes, and George is expecting this to boost our listernship considerably. There will be more to come as I get more information, but I wanted to let all deejays and the communication department know, as this is a big moment for the station.

Goucher Radio sent 8 representatives this past weekend to New York City for the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference. We did three live remote broadcasts from New York City with our equipment, and they were a success. We did a lot of good networking, and I have already gotten e-mails from several Program Directors who have tuned into our station.

Oliver Janney, the founder of our station, was nice enough to come in last weekend to take a look at some of the technical issues we have been encountering. A new miniplug jack has been ordered, and we should have that when you get back from spring break. In addition, a new flasher for the phone is in the works. Both phone lines are working, so if you want to do conference calls, you can do that.

Finally, Goucher Radio's Spring Concert will be Thursday, March 27th in Buchner Hall (Alumni House) from 9-11 PM. Jesse Rifkin from Sarah Lawrence (www.myspace.com/jesserifkin) will be headlining the show, and Goucher Radio's own, Quinn Struke (www.myspace.com/quinnsmusic), will be opening up. The event is free and I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Have a great spring break and thanks for showing the same respect to Pete and Dan, as you showed to me during my three years as Program Director. Your dedication is what makes this station flourish.

Best,
Richard

no show this past monday for i had a show at charm city art space (see: dino flyer). Tomorrow I leave for spring break so we will not be broadcasting this coming week, but hopefully, HOPEFULLY upon the gopher's return to goucher on the 23rd, the show on the 24th will be of epic proportions. We will be on iTunes, after all.

If you are interested in donating, you can go HERE! and contribute! All donations go to the American Cancer Society. Feel free to spread the word to your friends, family, everyone!
